A group of seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind targeting locations in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
