The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like typical body horror, but within Together exists a profound contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple face the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience right now.
